Bamboo is the Ideal Flooring for Your Design Project

September 06, 2006

As an interior designer, I often receive compliments on my home. I have had formal training, albeit my informal training far outweighs it, but regardless, I have always had a gift for design. When visitors, friends and family enter my home, they almost always immediately compliment my latest project. Yes, I have spent a great deal of time selecting furnishings and finding the perfect colors for the walls, but I also have a secret weapon - my floor.

Setting the Stage

If you look at a room as an empty box, the floor and walls demand the most attention. Wall color should coordinate with furniture and accessories, and the floor should anchor the room. The typical flooring in America is beige carpeting. This is a suitable anchor, but, to be frank, it is rather dull, especially coupled with beige or white walls.

To really give a room character and style, you must go beyond basic and find a unique flooring solution that enhances your overall decorating persona. For me this decision was bamboo flooring. In the interest of fairness, I should now say that we are individuals and must make our own selections of flooring materials, but I won't. I should make your decision for you; after all, I'm the professional. And I chose bamboo flooring for everyone.

Why Bamboo?

Because it's the best, of course! In actuality, bamboo is a very strong contender for "best" status. Its beauty and durability is comparable to hardwood, but the price of bamboo flooring is considerably less. Bamboo is available in a huge assortment of colors, tones, and grain variations.

My personal choice is the lighter blonde tones because they make my rooms seem light and airy. I've also seen homes with the dark, walnut shades, and they are classic and beautiful. It's simply a matter of personal style.

Bamboo is also considered "green." Don't misunderstand - even with the substantial color choices available, green is not usually one of them. I use green here to mean bamboo flooring is environmentally friendly. Bamboo grows much more quickly, as in hundreds of years, than hardwood trees. So, by selecting bamboo floors over hardwoods, you will be helping to preserve the natural resources.

A Final Thought

Through professional and personal experience, I have found bamboo flooring will give your room design the element it needs to draw earnest compliments. It has a clean, classy feel aided by the sheer volume of variations available. There is a perfect texture and shade for every home, and the value and beauty can not be beat.
