If you're in the market for a unique floor covering for your home that is quick and easy to install then floating bamboo flooring will do you just fine. The easy installation has made it a big hit with Do-it-Yourselfers as the hefty expense usually  associated with actually laying a floor can be somewhat lessened, or even eliminated in some cases.

Despite its user friendliness, there are important considerations to bear in mind prior to laying a bamboo floating floor to ensure that you don't experience any problems. Clearly, no matter how competent you are at DIY, and especially if you have never actually installed a floor before, it will benefit you to get a good book on the subject. 

As with any kind of flooring, maximum benefit and the minimum of problems will be had if the sub floor is suitably prepared. That is, it needs to be clean, dry and absolutely flat. Failure to observe these requirements will undoubtedly lead to problems that might not become evident until a significant amount of time after the floor has been put down, which can be years in some cases. Buckling and squeaking are just a couple of annoying consequences that will be avoided with some advance preparation.

Usually a bamboo floating floor will require that suitable underlay is in place on the sub floor. Many people prefer using cork for this as it has good shock absorbing properties, is resistant to corrosion and is excellent for dulling the hollow click sound often associated with floating floors. A fantastic alternative is a recycled type made from used car tires. Additionally, purpose made foam underlay or even plywood are other options worth considering.

With prefinished brands, such as Springwood, bamboo floating flooring can be simply installed by clicking together the precision joints that are manufactured into place on each plank. There are however some types that require that the individual planks be bonded together with glue. Therefore you should always check with your supplier to find the type that is preferable to you. 

Something to bear in mind when laying your floor is the requirement to leave a gap around the edge of the room to counter any expansion due to changes in humidity. Also of importance is the need to remember not to permanently fasten any appliances to the subfloor through the floating floor as this will restrict its natural movement which may cause it to buckle.
